Hurricane Lake WMA Glaise Creek II NAWCA Project Approved

The Hurricane Lake WMA Glaise Creek Enhancement II Standard NAWCA project is the second critical phase of a multi-phase effort aimed at the protection, restoration and enhancement of critical wetland habitats on public lands in the MAV. Through this project, DU and AGFC will restore a more natural hydrologic function to the South Green Tree Reservoir (GTR) at Henry Gray Hurricane Lake WMA, allowing it to pulse more naturally and function as a true bottomland hardwood forest, saving the forest as well as providing water quality benefits downstream.

Tree death at Hurricane Lake that will be addressed by restoring a more natural hydrologic function to the South Greentree Reservoir.

Approved for $1.99 million in NAWCA funds and leveraged by $4 million in match from Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, Ducks Unlimited, Mack’s Prairie Wings, and Wetlands America Trust, restoration will be accomplished through the installation of large spillways and structures in the existing levee of the south GTR to allow for a more natural flood pulse (read more about the AGFC decision to change GTR management for wildlife as well as current and future waterfowlers).
